SPECIAL UPDATE : for 1 July 2000  'DARWIN DAY'

This is a truly historic week for evolutionary biology! Following hard on the heels of our official opening, scientists have officially announced the 'opening of the book of human life' by publishing the first complete draft of the human genome.

As well as having potentially vast consequences in the field of medical treatment, this epic work is also a complete record of our biological evolution through time - telling the story of how our species has adapted to change over the millennia.

Charles Darwin would have been immensely proud of this achievement, which greatly enhances our understanding of the mechanism by which changes in biological species can occur and be passed on down the generations.

But that's not all! Saturday July 1st sees the anniversary of another historic event, being the date of the Linnean Society lecture in 1858 in which Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was first announced to the world.

The Darwin Gardens Trust will be celebrating this anniversary by lighting garden candles around the Millennium Maze at dusk (10 pm) on Saturday.

Having pioneered this spectacle last Saturday, we can predict that the event may involve a trial of 'man versus midge' in the species stakes, despite the technological advance of citronella candles!

It will however provide a unique spectacle, and pave the way for a wide variety of further events throughout the summer at Darwin Gardens Millennium Green
