UPDATE 24 : for 24 June 2000  'WORK AND PLAY'

Finishing touches are being made to 'Darwin's View' - the entrance monument of Darwin Gardens Millennium Green. This consists of a massive boulder from Ilkley Moor bearing a plaque of Charles Darwin which will be unveiled during our opening ceremony. The Millennium Maze monuments have also been completed ready for the official opening on Midsummer Day, Saturday 24th June.

A feature flagstone in the maze has been dedicated by Bettys & Taylors, the company behind such famous names as Betty's Cafe Tearooms and Taylor's Yorkshire Tea. More feature stones have also been laid, including those of Soroptimist International, British Watercolour Society, British Society of Painters, Joy Godfrey - Artist, Wharfedale German Circle and Kennedy, Thompson & Davies.

Work is also well underway on two monuments which will encompass the themes of 'The Tree of Life' and 'Living Waters'. Drystone walling plinths have been constructed, whilst designs for the pebble mosaics which will top these have been prepared by pupils from Ilkley Grammar School. E H Booth & Co, who run Booth's Supermarkets, have generously donated funds for construction of the 'Tree of Life', which will occupy a site alongside the living trees of our community wildlife hedge.

Volunteer workers have now completed clearance of a heavy accumulation of weeds, moss and roots from the platform beside the 'car park area', revealing an attractive original cobbled surface. We understand that surfacing of this kind was used to improve grip for the donkey transport which once plied between the town and White Wells, and is thus of historic interest as forming part of Ilkley's heritage.

Our volunteers have also installed a flagpole alongside Wells Road, ready to hoist a banner for opening day. With a Royal Mail postage stamp celebrating 'Millennium Greens' issued this month, and the recent announcement that the Bank of England is to feature Charles Darwin on a new £10 note later this year, we are looking forward to launching Darwin Gardens Millennium Green in a climate of considerable and continuing interest. We welcome all sections of our community - individuals, businesses, schools and societies, to become involved in this unique opportunity to commemorate the Millennium in Ilkley!

COME ALONG TO OUR OFFICIAL OPENING on MIDSUMMER DAY, 24th JUNE 2000!
