| UPDATE 6 : 31 December 1998 'GATHERING STRENGTH' |
Following a generous pledge of funding from Crest Homes, we can now begin to firm-up plans to complete the Millennium Maze area in time for a formal opening during Millennium Year - 2000 AD. The maze itself will include a planting scheme sensitively devised to blend in with the natural surroundings of the site. We have met Bradford Council representatives to discuss terms for an eventual long-term lease of the site to a Trust, which we intend to establish early next year.
Preliminary proposals for the scheme, including simulated bird's-eye views of the maze design, are now on public display in the entrance hall of Booth's supermarket and will also go on show at the Public Library and other locations early in the New Year. We wish to give everyone in the local community the chance to see and comment constructively on our plans, and to put forward their own suggestions. So please take this opportunity to express your support for the scheme, on survey forms provided at the display stand, or by writing to or emailing the address given in this release.
We welcome all contributors, whether as individuals, local businesses, or school and community groups to demonstrate their interest in this unique opportunity to celebrate the Millennium in Ilkley. By helping to create an inspirational, educational and recreational feature, of enduring value to both residents and visitors of all ages, we can all show our respect for Ilkley's past history and our determination to act positively for the future of our town and its surroundings.
So don't let the Millennium become yet another 'been there - got the T-shirt' (or mug!) affair. Together, we can achieve something of lasting benefit and continuing inspiration for generations to come.
Please write in with your letters of support, come to the Parish Council Open Meeting (7.30pm on Wednesday 17th February 1999 at the Clarke-Foley Centre) and as a community, we can make the next New Year something really special for Ilkley!
